Allyn Shulman and Larry Wright – The Latest Winners at 2012 WSOP
The poker world is abuzz with the WSOP (World Series of Poker) action. Allyn Jaffrey Shulman and Larry Wright are amongst the lucky players who hit gold at the event recently. Larry has been attending the event regularly for almost 40 years and Allyn belongs to a true blue poker family. The two players stand out from the others for a number of reasons.
Allyn sets new records
Allyn is married to Barry Shulman, the winner of 2009 WSOPE main event, and Jeff Shulman, a final tablist at 2009 WSOP main event, is her step-son. This week Allyn was the 3rd member of the Shulman family to reach a final table. This is a truly historic feat. While the Shulman family created history, Allyn set some records of her own. She is the 1st woman player to bag a bracelet at the WSOP in an event other than the Ladies Event. She also pocketed the second biggest payday, $603,713, of the series.
This year all the Shulmans were within inches of the elusive WSOP bracelet. In $1500 NLHM tournament held last weekend Barry was placed eight. In the next room in $5,000 Limit Hold’em event Jeff finished third and bagged $92,562. For the father-son pair, overlapping success is not a new thing. In 2009 Jeff was at the final table of November Nine event when Barry won the WSOPE title. This year Allyn surpassed them both with her outstanding performance at the final table of the Senior’s Event.
With 4,128 participants the Senior’s Event was the biggest tournament at 2012 WSOP, which makes Allyn’s victory even more significant. She was the eight woman at this year’s WSOP to reach a final table. To win gold she had to defeat Dennis Phillips, 2008 November Niner. At the final table Phillips and Allyn started out at ninth and eight positions respectively, but the duo was the last at the record breaking event. As the ultimate winner, Allyn is the first woman to win a bracelet in more than two hundred event in over 4 years.
Larry proves that good things happen to good people
Larry is someone who wouldn’t stand out in a crowd, but his win in the Deuces to Seven Draw Lowball event changed all that. He not only bagged a gold bracelet, but also a six figure prize. But unlike most poker players, Larry is not drawn to poker because of the glamour or the money. He is a simple man who makes his living raising cattle. He almost always has a smile on his face and kind words for others. Larry is also known for his innumerable acts of generosity.
The win did not come easy for Larry as he was up against the likes of Micheal Mizrachi, Brandon Cantu and Andy Lichtenberger. His win against all odds proved that ‘good things happen to good people’ is not just an adage. Larry plans to give away most of prize money to charity.
