Jaffrey-Shulman Breaks 249 Event Winning Streak that Men Enjoyed at WSOP
Allyn Jaffrey-Shulman landed her first win at the Senior’s World Championship of the 2012 WSOP. The event made history for two reasons – firstly, it had a record breaking field for a starting single day of a poker event, with 4,128 players; and secondly, it became the one in which a female player broke the winning streak – of 249 events – that male players had been enjoying at the WSOP. Jaffrey-Shulman stated that she was not only happy for herself with the win, but for all the women who had been grinding it at the WSOP tables to win a bracelet. Jaffrey-Shulman Gets Biggest Payday Ever Won by Female Players
With this win, Jaffrey-Shulman became the first woman to earn the top spot in an event other than the special annual one for ladies at the WSOP. She bagged $603,713, the biggest payout a female player has received at the WSOP (besides the payday Annette Obrestad got for her first place at the Main Event in the 2007 WSOPE).
The win did not come easily – Jaffrey-Shulman had to outlast a strong field over four days. The final table saw Jaffrey-Shulman battle it out against Hoyt Corkins, a 2-time WSOP bracelet winner; and Dennis Phillips (in heads-up play), who was a part of the first set of November Niners.
Three Final Tablers Eliminated at the Hands of Jaffrey-Shulman
Though Jaffrey-Shulman sent William Stabler and Stuart Spear packing from the table, she was the short stack when the final table with four players started. The final tablers went to work at the felt on Day 4. Jaffrey-Shulman continued her streak of sending players to the rails, with the elimination of Bob Phelps. The next to go was Phillips, who was looking forward to making his first WSOP bracelet.
Spear went all in with K-T on a flop with Q-3-2, against Jaffrey-Shulman’s A-8. The board looked like it was favoring Spear, especially when it brought a J, which gave him a couple of outs. However, the river brought a 7, which sent Spears out and gave Jaffrey-Shulman an ace-high. She went on to destroy Stabler’s chances of staying in the event, when she re-raised his short stack with 225,000.
Action folded to the 500,000 bet. On an A-5-3-2-K board, Stabler’s T-T did not bring him a win, but Shulman’s A-K let her stay in the game. Phelps’ elimination brought him a standing ovation, which was a testament to his perseverance at the table and his $270,727 payday, despite being the under-dog.
At one point in the game, Phillips and Jaffrey-Shulman were even in chip count. However, the scales tipped in the latter’s favor when Phillips went all-in with his A-6 against Jaffrey-Shulman’s A-T on a Q-T-2-5-J board. Phillips bagged $372,895 when he walked away from the table.
